I was thrilled to be able to ask Elena Sakovsky a few questions about her career and the brand.  Elena's drive and passion for fashion is inspirational, and the remarkable success of Skinny Bags is truly an amazing story.  A story, exclusively handcrafted into each individual bag.....

 

HumbleBeauty:  Tell us a little about yourself and what you do for a living.

Elena Sakovsky:  I’ve been in the fashion industry for quite a while. I came from the world of fast fashion, where I worked as buyer for almost five years. During that time I traveled a lot and collaborated with many brilliant professionals from all over the world.  At the same time, I have always been obsessed with unique designs. Therefore, my primary goal, while starting Skinny Bags, was to create unique, high quality purses with an affordable price. My husband, who is an aerospace engineer, helped me a lot. So eventually we combined our fashion and engineering experience together to create an outstanding product.



HumbleBeauty:  Where did the name “Skinny Bags” come from?

Elena Sakovsky:  It was idea of my husband. It used to be a kind of family joke. We feel like ‘skinny’ is a magic word nowadays. We have skinny jeans, skinny wine, now it’s time for Skinny Bags.



HumbleBeauty:  The different designs of the “Skinny Bags” are so unique and stylish.  Where do you get the ideas for these different styles?

Elena Sakovsky:  My biggest source of inspiration is California! There is definitely something in the air that encourages you to implement all your ideas. I am so grateful that we have a chance to design and manufacture Skinny Bags purses in Los Angeles and to support local economy at the same time.
Skinny Bags are all about unique, eye-catching design. A right handbag is a great way to express
style and personality, so it doesn’t have to be boring or ordinary. Most of Skinny Bags purses look
like books, which is already a fashion statement and which makes them so desirable. We have
clutches and cross-body bags with different catchy titles, “My Diary” “Love Story” and “Holy
Bible.” Our customers can even order a custom Skinny Bags purse and tell their own story.  It’s like a piece of character that they can take around. Also, we are excited to introduce our new Spring 2015 collection soon. I am in love with laser-cut laser and we are using it a lot in our new collection.

Elena Sakovsky:  Every Skinny Bags purse is a bold statement piece, while also very durable, reliable and practical. Each purse is made in Los Angeles using only high quality materials. Also, we especially love creating custom Skinny Bags. It’s a great way for our customers to express their personality and tell their own story.



HumbleBeauty:  What do you love most about your career?

Elena Sakovsky:  Most of all I love that I can always experiment, try different things and campaigns. It’s such a creative process.  Meanwhile, it's very important not to be afraid to fail.  I believe it's better to try and fail than to have never tried at all.  Another favorite part of my job is meeting very talented and creative people all over the world.  It's always a great inspiration for me!

 
HumbleBeauty:   What drives/motivates you in your career?

Elena Sakovsky:  Challenges.



HumbleBeauty:  What does success mean to you?

Elena Sakovsky:  The most important thing for me is to make sure that every customer is happy with our product and satisfied with the experience of shopping at Skinny-Bags.com.



HumbleBeauty:  What do you want your brand to be most remembered for?

Elena Sakovsky:  We would like our brand to be remembered for long last product that will help our
customers to express their own unique personality.

 

HumbleBeauty:   What advice would you give to other women on the path to pursuing their dreams?

Elena Sakovsky:  My best advice would be to be prepared to work hard, be persistent and never give up!  The career in the fashion industry might seem to be full of fun and glamorous events.  In fact, it’s a lot of work and patience. I have always been a workaholic; I have always worked crazy hours. But I believe that if you work hard great things will come your way.  Also, it’s very important to stay persistent and patient about your job. You might hear a lot of rejections until finally the success will come your way. So keep being focused and encouraged.
